Indexing experience, training, and skills

A sole proprietor, I’ve been doing business as Wordability since 1992. While I have focused on writing indexes for trade books, I have also authored indexes for textbooks, periodicals, and technical manuals. I am a generalist and work in many subject areas, including consumer health, sports training, and nutrition. My broad experience includes embedded indexing as well as creating stand-alone index manuscripts. I've indexed hundreds of books over the years;  click here to see a few representative titles.

I received initial indexing training through the former USDA Graduate School, and have continued professional development through the American Society for Indexing. I have a B.A in French from the University of Tennessee.

Prior to starting my own business, I worked for a growing retailer writing and producing employee handbooks, procedure manuals, newsletters, and even a couple of indexes. I learned about the publishing industry by working for a textbook producer where I  assisted with permissions, performed editorial duties, and indexed textbooks. Long before either of those jobs, I worked as a legal assistant in a large government agency coding documents for a database index, summarizing legal testimony, exercising editing supervision, and assisting in document productions. All these positions have contributed to my skill development.

Writing indexes is based on content analysis and knowledge of standard indexing practices. It requires knowledge of publishing processes and sensitivity to client needs. After indexing books for more than 20 years, I have the skills to enhance your work with a usable guide to its content.
